A Practical CNC Milling Design Review

Review tool access, internal features and functional requirements before requesting a machining proposal.

Review tool access, internal features and functional requirements before requesting a machining proposal.

Explain function before discussing geometry

Identify how the part is mounted, what it contacts and which dimensions control its function. Supply a drawing for requirements that need explicit attention. A machinable shape is not automatically a complete manufacturing specification. The review should connect geometry to the intended use, material, finish and inspection requirements.

Review internal features and access

Rotating cutters naturally leave a radius in internal corners. Deep pockets, narrow features and difficult access deserve particular attention in a review. Ask which features create the most challenging operations and whether a design adjustment could preserve the function. Any suggested change should be documented and approved by the design owner.

Distinguish functional and cosmetic requirements

Mark surfaces that mate with other components and surfaces that will be visible. Explain whether the part will be coated, polished or otherwise finished. The team can then discuss the sequence of operations and how the specified features will be controlled. Do not copy a tolerance table from another manufacturer into the order without agreement.

Request a decision-oriented response

A useful review should identify open questions, proposed changes and the assumptions behind the quotation. Keep a short list of decisions with an owner for each. If the design changes, update the drawing and model together. Record which revision was used for sampling and which revision is approved for the next order.
