Specify presentation, protection and variation identification alongside the product.

Describe how the product will be handled

Explain whether the product is destined for retail presentation, bulk distribution or another assembly operation. Identify the surfaces that need protection and any accessories that must stay with each unit. Product packaging and shipping packaging serve different purposes, so discuss both when they are in scope.

Map the variations

List style, color, size and other variation identifiers. Decide how each will be identified on individual packaging and on outer cartons. Keep the naming consistent with the order and sample records. If customer-provided barcodes or artwork will be used, provide the approved files and identify who is responsible for verification.

Review a packed sample

Evaluate the product inside the proposed packaging, not only the empty box or artwork. Check presentation, ease of removal, component protection and labeling accuracy. Any transportation testing should have an agreed method and acceptance criteria. A visually attractive sample alone does not establish shipping performance.

Record the final packing instruction

Include the approved packaging reference, units per pack, carton identification and any required documents. Note whether inserts, manuals or other customer-supplied items are included. When a product variation changes, review the packaging and label implications as well. This helps avoid treating packaging as an afterthought at the end of production.

Planning guidance for discussion. Project specifications, manufacturing scope and acceptance criteria must be agreed for the actual application.
